STUDENTS WISHING TO ATTEND SUMMER GRADUATIONS IN 2012

Summer graduations will be held between Monday 2 July and Tuesday 10 July 2012. I am writing to let you know that the online system which enables
students to apply to attend graduation is available in the Student Portal from Tuesday 14 February and will close on Tuesday 28 February 2012.
An email has been sent to all students giving them details of the system.
In early March, faculties will be allocated to specific ceremonies based on the numbers of students indicating that they wish to attend and
the summer graduation schedule will then be circulated.
Last year, several students were advised by their Course Directors that they should not register to attend graduation in the summer as they had
a resit. However, marks were subsequently raised at the summer examination board. As semester 1 marks are provisional, it may be appropriate
to advise students, depending on the extent of failure, to apply to attend graduation as they will receive a refund if the end of year
examination board determines that a resit is necessary.

Students Union Information on Assessment and Feedback

Assessment and Feedback
The Focus on Feedback guide has been developed by students for students to explain the types of assessment you may face, and also the feedback
that you can expect from your lecturer or module coordinator.
It is available from: http://uusu.org/files/focus-on-feedback-2011.online.pdf
Assessment
Take time to read through the guide and think about why you might be doing the type of assessment that you are doing, for example class tests
will tell you quickly if you have grasped a technical aspect of your class (this is called diagnostic assessment) or maybe you are doing a
longer piece of coursework which you have had to research and develop a deep understanding of a topic (this is called summative assessment).
Feedback
After putting effort and worry into your assessments you want to get feedback on your work from your lecturer. This guide explains the feedback
that you should expect from the staff on your course. This can come in different forms, such as a discussion in class or specific feedback classes.
It is important that you attend these to find out how you could improve. You should also feel comfortable enough to speak to staff if you feel
you have not received adequate feedback, or if you are not sure why you received the mark you did.

Volunteer Programme for Suas Educational Development

My name is Ben Monks, I am currently working with the Volunteer Programme for Suas Educational Development (www.suas.ie).
Suas is a leading mid-sized charity which works in Ireland, India and Kenya to provide quality education in under-resourced areas. We provide financial and technical assistance throughout the year to our partner schools, and recruit diverse teams of dedicated and enthusiastic young Volunteers to work in some of the most deprived areas of India and Kenya for 10 weeks every summer. We are seeking students from a range of different backgrounds to take part in our Programme this year and we are interested in recruiting students from UU to form our diverse teams. The placement is a great way for students to gain first-hand experience of the challenges facing these communities, whilst learning key skills in the areas of team development, leadership and project management. Returning Volunteers also form part of avibrant alumni network.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or phone – details listed below.
The Suas Volunteer Programme offers:
· A 10 week work placement in India or Kenya.
· Comprehensive pre-departure training (3 preparation weekends), including knowledge and professional skills development (team development, language training, development modules, teaching practice, Health, Safety and Security and more).
· One week of in-country ‘Global Perspectives’ workshops to explore development issues. Previous workshops have been given by UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, and Concern.
· Support from Suas in Ireland to assist with your fundraising (resources, materials and training).
Application deadline: Monday 5th December 2011
Preparation Phase: February – June 2012
